On arrival at the test centre you will be asked by an examiner for your driving licence - you will need both parts and theory test certificate if you have it.

You will be asked to read and sign a declaration that the car is taxed insured and a valid MOT certificate.

The examiner will ask you to read a number plate from a distance of 20.6 metres. If you need glasses to read the number plate, you will be required to wear them for the full duration of the test. If you fail to read the number plate on the 3rd attempt, the test will not proceed,

The examiner will ask you to enter the vehicle, but you should not start the car as they walk around to make sure the car is ok for test.

When the examiner enters the car they will ask you a “show me” question and a “tell me” question. If you get 1 or 2 wrong you will get a fault, but getting these wrong is not a fail unless you get more than 15 driving faults on the driving part of test.

The test will last between 35 & 40 minutes, taking you through various roads. You should always follow the road ahead unless otherwise directed - the examiner will give you directions in good time.

On the test you will be asked to carry out independent driving, where the examiner will give you instructions in advance as which route to follow. You will also be asked to do an emergency stop and one of 4 manoeuvres:

  1. Turn in the road
  2. Left reverse around a corner
  3. Reverse park into a parking bay (bay parking)
  4. Reverse parking behind a car (parallel parking)

At the end of the test you will pass if you have less than 15 minor faults. However, if you have less than 15 minor faults but get a serious or dangerous fault, this will result in an automatic fail.

If you accumulate 15 or more minor faults, this will also result in an automatic fail.
